What Happens in MS: The Autoimmune Attack on Myelin

Multiple sclerosis makes the body's immune system attack the protective covering of nerve cells, called myelin, in the brain, optic nerve, and spinal cord. The myelin sheath works just like insulation on electrical wires - damage to it leaves the actual nerve fiber exposed, which blocks or slows down signal transmission. The body tries to fix myelin damage but can't do it perfectly, and this leaves scars - that's why we call it "multiple sclerosis," which means "multiple scars."

As the disease progresses, nerve cells die off more quickly in damaged areas than in normal areas.
